Focus game
A focus game where the only way to play is to finish real work
Short answer: a good focus game rewards minutes you spent focused, not minutes you spent in the game. Pondoro is a gamified focus timer for iPhone built on that rule. You play by finishing Pomodoro-style sessions: each one earns coins and XP, grows a living aquarium, and logs a sea creature in your Field Guide. The extras, like fish breeding and races, are fed by focus time and capped so they never become the main event.

A gamified focus timer is a countdown timer that adds game mechanics, such as points, collections, levels or a world that grows, to the act of focusing. The timer measures the work; the game makes finishing feel like it counted. People search for a focus game or productivity game when a bare countdown feels like homework and they want a reason to start the next session.
The risk is obvious: a game can become one more distraction. The difference between a focus game that helps and one that hurts is where the rewards come from and when you are allowed to play.
Four rules for a focus game that actually helps
- Rewards come only from finished focus. If tapping around the game earns as much as working, the game wins. In Pondoro, coins and XP are granted when a session ends, and an abandoned session does not pretend to count.
- There is nothing to do during the session. The game should sit still while you work. Pondoro shows a calm tank and your companion fish, and Deep Focus can shield distracting apps until the session ends.
- Longer is not always better.A game that pays more for every extra minute pushes people past healthy session lengths. Pondoro's Depth Dive tops out at 40 minutes: anything longer is still a Twilight Zone dive.
- Missing a day costs nothing permanent.Loss-based mechanics work until the first bad week, then they become a reason to quit. Pondoro's streak rests instead of breaking.
How Pondoro's focus game works, session by session
Every Pondoro session follows the same loop. You name what you are focusing on, pick a length (Classic 25 is the default; Custom runs from 5 to 180 minutes), and start. The timer is anchored to the moment you pressed start and keeps running if you lock the phone, with a Live Activity on the Lock Screen. When the session ends, three things happen:
- The reef grows.Coins, XP and companion care land right away, so the tank you come back to tomorrow looks different because of today's work.
- The dive is logged. Session length picks the depth (Shallows, Reef or Twilight Zone), the hour picks the tide (dawn, day, dusk or night), and staying undisturbed keeps the water crystal. One of 24 sea creatures is logged in your Field Guide; the shiest only appear in crystal water.
- Sometimes, a surprise.Rare moments, like a whale's shadow or a bioluminescent bloom, happen out of view during a session and are only revealed in the recap. They cannot be bought or rerolled.
Pondoro's game mechanics and what each one rewards
| Mechanic | What it rewards | Guardrail |
|---|---|---|
| Coins and XP | Finishing a session | Daily reward cap; no paid coin packs |
| Field Guide (24 creatures) | Variety: different lengths, times of day, undisturbed focus | Depth tops out at 40+ minutes |
| Seasonal migrations (6) | Focusing during their months of the year | They return every year; nothing is missable forever |
| Fish collecting and breeding | Focus minutes hatch eggs and grow rare hybrids | Eggs only hatch with focus time |
| Fish races | A fun break: Easy, Medium or Hard tracks | Race coins per day are capped at that day's focus coins |
| Weekly tide | Total focus this week brightens the tank | Resets fresh every Monday; never takes anything away |
| Coral streak | Showing up on consecutive days | Rests instead of breaking, then regrows |
Is a focus game just procrastination with extra steps?
It can be, if the game is more fun than the work it is attached to. Pondoro keeps the playful parts downstream of focus. Racing is dessert: the coins you can win from races each day are capped at the coins you earned focusing that day. Breeding needs focus minutes, not taps. The Field Guide only fills when you finish sessions, so the fastest way to progress is always to start the next one.
If you notice you are opening the app to play instead of to focus, use Deep Focus to shield the apps that pull you away, and keep the session short enough to start. The ADHD-friendly focus timer guide covers that routine step by step.
Is Pondoro pay-to-win?
Pondoro is free to start, and every core mechanic above works on the free plan. There are no ads and no coin packs, and coins have no cash value. Pondoro Plus ($4.99 a month, $29.99 a year with a 3-day free trial, or $49.99 lifetime) speeds up single-player progression: double coins per session, a higher daily cap, every fish rarity, and rare eggs in half the focus time. Field Guide sightings and rare moments cannot be bought; they only come from finished dives.

Frequently asked questions
- What is a focus game?
- A focus game is an app that turns focused work into game progress, usually through a timer that pays out points, collections or a growing world when you finish a session. Pondoro is a focus game for iPhone in which finished sessions grow an aquarium and log sea creatures in a Field Guide.
- Does gamifying focus actually help?
- It helps most when rewards come only from finished focus time and arrive right away, so finishing feels like it counted. It hurts when the game is playable during work or punishes missed days. Pondoro is designed around the first and avoids the second.
- Can I play Pondoro without focusing?
- Not in any way that progresses much. Coins, XP, eggs and Field Guide sightings all come from finished sessions, and race winnings each day are capped at that day's focus coins.
- How many creatures can I collect?
- The Field Guide has 24 sea creatures across three depths, plus 6 seasonal migrations that return every year and rare moments revealed in the session recap. Separately, the aquarium has 36 fish to collect and breed.
- Do longer sessions earn rarer creatures?
- Up to a point. Sessions of 40 minutes or more are Twilight Zone dives, and the depth stops there, so there is no reward for pushing past a healthy length. The rarest creatures need crystal water, which means staying with the session.
- Is Pondoro free?
- Yes, Pondoro is free to start with no account. Pondoro Plus is optional: $4.99 a month, $29.99 a year with a 3-day free trial, or $49.99 lifetime.
