Deep work timer

A deep work timer for long, undisturbed focus sessions

Short answer: a deep work timer protects one long block, typically 50 to 90 minutes, for a single demanding task, with distractions blocked and a real break at the end. Pondoro is an iPhone focus timer you can set anywhere from 5 to 180 minutes. Any session of 40 minutes or more becomes a Twilight Zone dive, Deep Focus shields the apps you choose until it ends, and staying undisturbed is what brings out the rarest creatures in your Field Guide.

What is deep work?

Deep work is focused, distraction-free effort on cognitively demanding tasks, the kind of work that improves your skills and is hard to replicate. The term was popularized by computer scientist Cal Newport in his 2016 book Deep Work, which contrasts it with shallow work: email, scheduling and other tasks that can be done while distracted.

A deep work timer is simply a timer used to fence off that kind of block. Its job is to make the start official, keep interruptions out for a fixed length, and tell you when to stop.

How long should a deep work session be?

Most people do well with sessions between 50 and 90 minutes for deep work, after a warm-up period of shorter blocks. There is no single proven length. Pick the longest block you can reliably finish without checking your phone, then adjust.

Where the 90-minute focus session idea comes from

The 90-minute figure has two common sources. The first is sleep researcher Nathaniel Kleitman's basic rest-activity cycle, the hypothesis that a roughly 90-minute rhythm seen in sleep continues during the day (Kleitman, Sleep, 1982). The evidence for a fixed daytime cycle that should set your work blocks is limited, so treat it as a rule of thumb, not a law.

The second is research on expert performance. In a 1993 study of musicians, K. Anders Ericsson and colleagues found that top performers practiced in sessions of limited length separated by rest, and rarely sustained deliberate practice for more than about four hours a day (Ericsson, Krampe and Tesch-Römer, Psychological Review, 1993). The practical takeaway is the same either way: long blocks work best when they end in real rest, and a few of them per day is a full day of deep work.

How to run a deep work session with a timer

  1. Choose one task and write it down."Draft the methods section" beats "work on the paper". Pondoro asks for an intent before every session.
  2. Set the length before you start. In Pondoro, Custom runs from 5 to 180 minutes in 5-minute steps, and Siri, Shortcuts or the Action Button can start a 50-minute session hands-free.
  3. Block what pulls you away.Deep Focus shields the apps and categories you pick for the length of the session, using Apple's Screen Time, and lifts as soon as you finish.
  4. Put the phone face down and let the timer run. The countdown is anchored to when you pressed start, and a Live Activity shows the remaining time on the Lock Screen, so you never need to open the app to check.
  5. Take a real break. After a long block, step away for 10 to 20 minutes. Pondoro's breathing breaks end on time and are spent breathing slowly with your fish instead of scrolling.

Twilight Zone dives: what long sessions do in Pondoro

Depth Dive turns each finished Pondoro session into a dive. Session length picks the depth: Shallows under 20 minutes, Reef from 20 to 39, and the Twilight Zone at 40 minutes and up. The start hour picks the tide (dawn, day, dusk or night), and staying undisturbed keeps the water crystal clear. Each dive logs one sighting in a Field Guide of 24 sea creatures, 8 per depth.

The Twilight Zone is home to moon jellies, a chambered nautilus and humpback whales at dusk. Its two shyest creatures, the blue whale and the ghost jelly, only appear in crystal water, which means not leaving the session for more than 60 seconds. That is the deep work rule turned into a reward.

The depth deliberately stops at 40 minutes. A 90-minute session is a Twilight Zone dive, and so is a 45-minute one, so Pondoro never rewards you for pushing past a length that is healthy for you.

Deep work, Pomodoro, and the rest of your day

Deep work and the Pomodoro technique are not rivals. Many people warm up with one or two 25-minute blocks, covered on the Pomodoro timer for iPhone page, then move into a long session once they are rolling. Students planning long revision blocks can use the study timer for students, and if you focus better with friends nearby, the study with me timer shows how Shared Ponds work. Frequently asked questions

What is a deep work timer?
A deep work timer is a timer used to protect one long, distraction-free block for a single demanding task, usually 50 to 90 minutes, followed by a real break. Pondoro works as a deep work timer on iPhone, with custom lengths up to 180 minutes and free app blocking during the session.
Is 90 minutes the best length for deep work?
Not for everyone. The 90-minute figure traces back to Nathaniel Kleitman's rest-activity cycle hypothesis and to research on expert practice, but there is no proven ideal. Start with 45 to 50 minutes and extend once you can finish those without checking your phone.
Can I set a 90-minute timer in Pondoro?
Yes. Custom sessions run from 5 to 180 minutes in 5-minute steps. Any session of 40 minutes or more is logged as a Twilight Zone dive in your Field Guide.
Do longer sessions earn more in Pondoro?
The depth stops at the Twilight Zone (40 minutes and up), so a 90-minute dive and a 45-minute dive reach the same depth. The rarest Twilight creatures depend on staying undisturbed, not on going longer.
What counts as a disturbance during a session?
Leaving the session for more than 60 seconds. One disturbance makes the water rippled and two or more make it murky, which keeps the shyest creatures hidden for that dive. The session still counts and nothing is taken away.
How many deep work sessions should I do per day?
Two to four long sessions is a full day for most people. Research on expert performers found they rarely sustained deliberate practice for more than about four hours a day, with rest between sessions.
Does the timer keep running if I lock my phone?
Yes. Pondoro's countdown is anchored to the moment you pressed start, and a Live Activity keeps the remaining time on your Lock Screen.
